🇺🇲Vietnam War Stories: Honoring the Heroes We Lost: Herman Carol Acker of Louisiana

Today we honor Seaman Apprentice Herman Carol Acker, of Reserve Louisiana, who served with the 7th Fleet, USS Newport News (CA 148). Herman was serving aboard the USS Newport News when an 8-inch projectile in the bore of the center gun of Turret Two exploded prematurely, setting off several powder casings in the hoists. They had been providing naval gunfire support off the coast of North Vietnam. Over 2 dozen men perished and dozens of others injured. Herman was only 18 years old at the time of his passing.

A recipient of the Purple Heart Medal, Seaman Apprentice Acker is honored on the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington DC on Panel 01W Line 76. Herman lies in rest at Pearlington Cemetery in Pearlington Louisiana. Lest We Forget.
