You’ve probably seen the video circulating online of this crazy-looking turret. So, what exactly is it? It’s called the Skyex, an autonomous tracking turret capable of firing nearly 1,000 fragmentation rounds per minute. And yes, as you might have guessed, it’s German engineering at its finest.
The Skyex features a quad-sensor system, including a tracking radar, a TV and infrared camera, and a laser rangefinder. These components allow it to autonomously track any target once assigned, and as you can see, it doesn’t waste any time doing so.
But perhaps its coolest feature is the ammo—called AHEAD. Each round is programmed in real time to detonate at an exact moment based on the target’s distance. This creates a cloud of tungsten projectiles that strike the target with near-perfect accuracy, offering a high probability of a kill.
So, if you’re feeling adventurous, maybe tell BMW to mount one of these on your next 7 Series!
